Picnic with Dodoens in the Garden

Happy Birthday Rembert Dodoens! In 2017, we celebrate his 500th birthday! Rembert Dodoens was an important botanist and physician in the sixteenth century. He was the first botanist who wrote a book about herbs in Dutch. This work has been the reference work for physicians and pharmacists for years.

On the big and cozy hexagonal picnic table, you can find herbs and plants with more information on the meaning attributed to them by Dodoens in his ‘Cruydeboeck’ of 1554. Bring your own picnic and enjoy another nice picnic in the Botanic Garden!

In the Garden Shop, there is an original copy of the ‘Cruydeboeck’.

You can admire an original copy and reproductions of Dodoens’ ‘Cruydeboeck’, as well as works on botany from the 16th century in the library of the Herbarium building, working days in July from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.!

Hop in the Garden Shop and taste one of our delicious summer marmalades: tropical, orange and mango chutney or a lovely flowering tea.

For the children: download one of King Amaryllo’s summer coloring pages here or here.
